About the Lugo Codex Project

The Lugo Codex Project entails the creation of a digital photographic facsimile of a manuscript of chant known as the Lugo Codex, creation and implementation of a searchable database of specific information about the manuscript's contents, and their presentation on the World Wide Web. The final digital media product, a website, will feature a user interface consisting of a database-driven search engine, allowing the user to search for text within an index of chant titles. The search results will be linked to a collection of digital images of the manuscript in various resolutions. The project will also include a technical description of the technology employed in creating the facsimile and the website, as well as an overview of the techniques of digital restoration as they apply to sources of chant and specifically to the Lugo Codex. The project will make this work available to performers and scholars of chant who have access to the Internet through any graphics-capable browser and will also serve as a case study for digital restoration of manuscripts.
As a contribution to the fields of vocal music and musicology, the project will make the manuscript available for performance and study by musicians and scholars around the world, thereby expanding the panorama of Old Hispanic chant by bringing to light a collection of Galician chant, locally collected and preserved.
